Why America's Veterans Should Be Honored
By Leah Zweigle, Cedar Rapids Adventist School 8th grader

Why we should honor our American Veterans is because they give us our freedom everyday. No matter rain or shine, they are out there fighting for us.  They were prepared to risk or give their lives each day for our freedom. Sometimes we forget why they fought in wars, but we shouldn't.

American Veterans came back from the war because they survived more than we can think possible. We don't want to think about what they have heard or saw, but they do each day. They saw their friends and brothers fall at their feet giving their lives for our freedom. The country's future rests on their shoulders.

As American soldiers, they went off to war and sacrificed their time each day to win our freedom. For a long period of time they didn't come home to be with their families. They could be at home with a nice job, but they choose not to. They were out there fighting a war for us.

When veterans first begin in their careers, they sign up to become a soldier. One of soldier's duties is to fight for America and what it believes in.  One of the things that America believes is in our freedom. To get that freedom you have to have willing men and women ready to fight for this country. When they retire from the service they have fought for this country and for our freedom. Shouldn't we say thank you for our freedom by honoring these who have fought in wars for it for us?

In conclusion, why we should honor our American Veterans, because our freedom has rested on their shoulders. If they fail, our country fails with them. We give out metals to them to show our appreciation, but that barely covers it. They have been in wars and seen horrors that we cannot hardly image. I wonder if we can ever give them enough to cover the cost of our freedom; freedom that they have fought in wars to keep.
