The cafeteria at Sunnydale Academy is getting a much-needed makeover this summer.

According to Gary Russell, Sunnydale principal, the tables and chairs, carpeting, ceiling tiles and various other areas have seen a lot of wear since the last remodel in 1997. “We’ve also seen an increase in enrollment and are operating at capacity,” he said, “so there’s a need to address some concerns about space.”

The first phase of the remodel is happening now and is expected to be completed by Aug. 3. This includes a new metal roof; new carpet, lighting and ceiling tiles in the dining area; new tile, fixtures and paint in the bathrooms; and an updated layout for the food service area.

The second phase includes new tables and chairs for the dining room and new hot and cold food serving decks. Funds for the tables and chairs have already been raised, and funds are currently being raised for the hot and cold food serving decks.

Plans for a third phase, which includes a new lobby addition on the south side of the cafeteria, are underway.
